looking for help.
I went to my gp regarding my stomach acid initially and i had a fungal infection on my nail, he prescribed me terbinifine for 3 months but i could only tolerate it for 4 weeks i started feeling generally unwell and determined it was likely the terbinifine. shortly after this i started getting quite bad reflux and some bloating after meals and feeling a bit nauseous anytime id eat large meals. he suspected due to the high amount of training of both the gym and BJJ i do i probably have a hiatal hernia and prescribed me a PPI lansapazole 30mg to be taken 2x a day for a month and then go down to 1x a day until i run out.
(something i think is relevant but also very unique to my situation is since a kid ive always had a terrible habit of biting my nails and skin around my nails, on my thumbs on the knuckle, calluses etc etc. and i swallow that skin, and its a very subconcious thing and the thing that used to stop me from doing it would be this sudden onset of nausea while i would do it, and that would tell me to stop doing it. so i cant imagine how much bad bacteria im adding into my gut, which i think is very relevant given my symptom exacerbation once the 60mg per day of ppi absolutely wiped out my stomach acid as that protective barrier)
Within 2 weeks of taking these ppi's my symptoms worsened dramatically, my bloating after meals was awful, felt like pressure all across my abdomen centrally as well as on the left and right under my ribs and a dull aching in my mid back. The nausea worsened to an almost chronic degree and the only time i felt reasonably ok was first thing in the morning on a completely empty stomach, when i stopped the ppis i had very bad reflux practically all day so ive been taking 20mg omeprazole 1x per day to try and keep on top of that.
i went back to the dr explaining this and he had me do a check for h.pylori and a FIT check to check for any blood in my stool, the pylori came back negative but they did find microscopic blood in my stool so he has sent me for a colonoscopy next week that im dreading especially given im a massive overthinker and catastrophise like crazy in my head.
a week or two after taking the ppis on the high dose i noticed my stool began to be a more yellow colour and when doing one of my samples i noticed it was very greasy and had a layer of mucus over the top of it. ive always ate a lot of steaks, a lot of meat but always a pretty clean diet, just had high protein to support my goals with my training.
i decided to try carnivore but my appetite has just deminished completely to the point where i was consuming hardly any calories and the lack of glucose made it impossible to function absolutely plummeting my mental health. ive hardly been able to eat at this point losing 25lb and the only way i can eat anything without feeling bloated asf and pressure all over my abdomen is to walk a decent distance immediately after eating anything and that seems to help the motility.
ive since added carbs back in just so i can physically function as taking on the carnivore flu at the same time as all of this was just too much i could hardly walk around and think straight.
on reflection it makes perfect sense for me to have been getting acid reflux early on, whether i have a hiatal hernia or not i would eat very large meals, not chew my food well, and eat quite literally right before going to bed, so thats dumb lifestyle things that i should have adressed prior.
ive always trained a lot and been very healthy but it just all started going downhill fast from the day i took the antifungal and then the ppi's just seemed to absolutely skyrocket the problem within 1-2 weeks and im just looking for any advice or reassurance from anyone as to what might be going on because its effecting my life dramatically and my mental health to an extreme degree.
i havnt done a sibo test yet as wasnt sure if it was even worth the cost given how little attention my drs have been giving to it, theyve said it would make perfect sense for it to be sibo but given the blood in the stool a colonoscopy is recommended to rule everything out.
any help or advice/anecdotal experience would be greatly appreciated as this is seriously affecting all aspects of my life at the moment
