Gift card return?

I bought a Nintendo gift card for a gift that came arrived late, so I bought another one in target and planned to return this one.

Turns out gift cards can't be returned but I chatted and, because it came in late, they refunded me the money and told me to keep it.

Coincidently I have another family birthday next week I can use this one for, but I can't check the balance without scratching it, and gift it scratched is kind of weird...

Question is... when they refund it also deactivate it?
