How important really is it that a gun is compatible with your dominant hand?

I’m working on a worldbuilding project and in one area the ratio of left vs right handed people is much more even (around 60/40 majority right). I want to have the guns in this region be ambidextrous but I’ve heard that might not be necessary. The technology is roughly ww1 inspired. Would right handed people be fine with bolt actions designed for lefties and vice versa or would there be enough demand for ambidextrous weapons?
