I have a tea timer built into my brain
Whenever I’m making tea, I set a timer for a 4 minute steep. I’ve been doing this multiple times a day for ~5-10 years and it’s gotten to the point where my brain will suddenly remember my tea about 3-5 seconds before the timer goes off. Usually I’ll get up to walk to my kitchen and the alarm will go off as I’m walking. It has a similar “jolt” feeling to when your brain wakes you up a few minutes before your alarm in the morning.
I just think it’s remarkable that the human brain can adapt to something like this without any particular effort or intention. Especially on as small a time scale as 4 minutes where you can’t chalk it up to a hormonal cycle, like you might be able to with a reliable waking time.
Has anyone else become uncannily good at recognizing when their steep timer is done? Does anyone know what mechanisms in the brain enable this level of accuracy?
