Never knew a tale where Snow White was more arrogant about their beauty than the Queen.
Volume 9 Extras:
Cover: This is the beginning of the whole "the cover duo don't matter" thing that sadly takes over from here on. I know some say it probably starts later with >!Rin/Suu!<, but...>!there hasn't been a single need or desire to have a chapter-long interaction between Yamame and Momiji...ever. We got the whole sequence in Momiji's intro with the first Forehead Anna (which she does a couple times), then we get the Equipment Chapter later where Kusuri puts those two together and...that's it. Yamame and Momiji really just have nothing in common, their partners tend to be much different directions (Yamame usually with Hakari as we'll see next time, then mostly Iku or Hasuha; and Momiji more or less is with Kusuri or anyone that can give her something to fondle ala Hakari, Hahari, Meme, Eira...you get it) and there just hasn't been a need or reason for them to interact other than "the same family". I get it, not every cover partner seem to matter...but the funny thing is that the cover partners all seem to have this whole running element of having something to differentiate them of significance to give us an "opposites attract" factor: Hakari/Karane as "the planning perv and the acting tsundere", Mimimi/Meme as "the sun and the moon", Hahari and Kurumi as "the adult and the kid", etc. Yamame and Momiji are literally "the tall and the small"; Yamame being the "giant" of the girls, and Momiji being the tiny one who just runs around grabbing things. There should be plenty for the two to interact with and there should be a chapter about that somewhere...but it hasn't happened and it probably is never meant to be. A pity.!<
69: Um...what were they even thinking here? Come on, are they brazen enough to even have Rentarou potentially zing...WITH HIS OWN ARTIST!? I get it, it's a joke saying "The Love God if he was drunk", but I do think it's disrespectful to probably pull that on essentially one of his own creators.
70: Mimimi, are you the biggest kissing addict of the entire harem? Probably considering her "opening activity."
71: So those two idiots were never really delinquents but still acted as delinquents to...get Chiyo's attention. I mean there are easier ways to annoy Chiyo and get her attention...>!annoy her about being better in making yakisoba than her; or that you have twintails and she doesn't...!<
72: Aww...Nano wants to sew her tiny outfit with Meme's help. That's adorable.
73: There's probably not enough money in the world for that show to re-enact the whole Rentarou/Mei Frieza stunt.
74: Huh, so if daddy Yakuzen showed his true form from the beginning...maybe it would have been a more typical scenario of a father-in-law relationship. So him being 8 was a good thing.
75: Of all the things Rentarou is, telephone repairman isn't one of them.
76: I think Hahari needs to learn a valuable lesson from this: when a Yakuzen tells you their age, BELIEVE IT!
77: So they nearly died...except Papari said "GO HOME!" How did they react to that? What about Hahari considering her backstory; or Hakari meeting her dad and not being a baby or him dead? (OK he's still dead but...)
Chp. 077.5 - My First Fluff
The hands of a master at work.
I guess it's "feel up the Yakuzens" day if it's just Kusuri and Yaku.
Wait, Momiji is just closing her eyes and playing with their cheeks? Then why/how did she switch from the granddaughter to the grandma?
I like the idea of "depths of age" showing she's 8 but is still 89 regardless.
And so Yaku leads to the big reveals of the chapter.
And Momiji...felt things as a child? So what did she even feel? Was her mom a Hanazono or Kakure in training?
No...Mrs. Momi is just...Momiji...but taller.
Yeah she loves soft things. How did her mom even know?
Not much to really do if she's just sitting there. Sure the bounce house is the best place for your daughter?
Guess it took a bit for appreciation.
And right into another girl. Such is the problem of bounce houses.
Ouch, it's a butt. That's gotta...
Wait, she wants the butt? Guess she prefers the real deal.
That girl looks familiar...WAIT IS THAT...
IT IS...AND THAT'S HAHARI! As...a normal...looking...mo...ther...IS THIS AN ALTERNATE TIMELINE!?
I guess Hakari respected her mom back then.
And Momiji sees something else that's soft...and huge...
And she...wait, this can't be Hahari, she isn't acting anything like her and just drooling like a madwoman and obsessing with someone caressing those!
And for those who thought it only meant to happen with girlfriends and Rentarou...
And afterwards...Momiji forgot the whole thing. Funny...how can ANYONE forget Hahari's boobs?
By the way, we have a page left, let's do Yaku real quick!
I mean she has 89 years of history, let's see what...
On second thought...never mind.
I think the less we find out about Yaku's war life, the better.
I agree: keep it secret. Like forever. (especially if it was THAT war.)
Review ("newtimer version"): Well that...went places I didn't expect. Between Momiji's early Hanazono exposure and Yaku's...past...I think this is probably one of the most unexpected of these post-volume chapters we've had that actually felt meatier than it should be.
Serious Version (My Current Thoughts): >!I want to save my thoughts on Yaku until I'm done with Momiji because...there's a lot to unpack with her. Luckily, I do think that Momiji's origins and how she really, REALLY became obsessed with massages and fluffing and the like tying back to the Hanazonos is unexpected...but somehow makes sense to her. I do find weird that she would just suddenly forget the first pair of boob she ever felt and just lusted after Hahari years later not really remembering she was the first boobs she really felt up. We know later that Momiji seems to have this encyclopedic knowledge of boobs and keeps anything that she really loves in the back of her mind (mostly boobs but also Eira's butt and Kurumi's belly), so to have her literally know about Hahari's...mountains, experienced them as a kid, but then seem like she's just experiencing them for the first time now...does feel odd now knowing that she did feel them as a kid. Is Momiji's short-term memory just not that locked in because she didn't think she'd ever talk to Hahari ever again after that moment of chance? Probably the even bigger shock about this origin though: Hahari is normal the entire time. She's not overprotective, she's not haughty with money, she's not obsessing with her massive boobs or babies or anything: she's just a concerned mother (in her mid-late teens...considering Hakari's age, she'd probably be about 14-16 and compared to post-birth pics of Hahari, the combination of puberty and her daughter at a young age has really hit her big time) and just looks like a concerned mother with massive puppies hidden under her sweater that a future masseuse would lust after. I also say this because...even comparing this to Mei's origin which is a few years later since Hakari is a bit older when Mei is saved, Hahari is wearing a fur coat and obsessed with her philosophy of having money for the sake of what's needed...and even that side's not here. (and let's not get started on what we get when we get to Mai's origin some time from now) This is literally the most "normal" Hahari ever has been, and I guess it's a lull period for her: she's still protecting Hakari as her legacy but the wounds of the death of Papari are still raw and she isn't obsessed with it as she was with the "Hakari Rescue Arc",, and it feels like without fully realizing what puberty gave her or the greater power of money being a Hanazono, Hahari just doesn't have the "quirks" or "problems" she'd later have. It's funny that all this about Hahari is just so easily found from an origin story for Momiji, but I just find it amazing how much of Hahari's life story is conveyed in this manga (and more is coming in a couple more chapters).!<
!So with that said...(sighs)...yeah, Yaku. As I mentioned in my Chapter 75 review, we have no idea what war Yaku fought in; merely that she fought in "a" war and eventually met her husband, who she saw as the "paragon of masculinity" as a soldier in said war. The big issue is, of course, considering the timing of it all: the manga begins in essentially an alternate version of "Heisei 31"; Heisei 1 is 1989, and thus Heisei 31 is 30 years later, which would be 2019 in the Western calendar. (and funny enough, Heisei 31 really only lasted.. four months since the emperor abdicated the throne and the new emperor was coronated a month after the manga started, thus May, 2019 on would be "Reiwa Year 1"; and it's funny in that since Japanese school starts in April, they were only in Heisei 31 for one month before being in Reiwa 1...no wonder spring lasts forever in this manga.) So with that said, if the manga takes place in "Spring, 2019" and Yaku is 89 years of age, then 2019 - 89 = 1930. !<
!And...that's where things get dicey about how old Yaku is, her age, and this flashback. Around the time Yaku was born in 1930, Japan was essentially on the move in our world, and not in a good way; neglected by Western powers despite helping them in World War I, obsessed with gathering land to try and expand it's territory for their own people, and in a society ruled by a government where the Emperor was essentially "God" and no one could question or negate anything he said or those ordaining his orders (especially a growing military power), Japan was looking less and less like someone that wanted to belong to the evolving world structure outside those who believed similarly with their own politics and turmoil at the same time. As a scope of things: by the time Yaku was 3, Japan invaded Manchuria as part of it's desires of territorial conquest; and by the time she would be 7, the Marco Polo Bridge Incident occurred, which essentially was THE first spark of what would eventually be World War II. (as a history lesson: while many consider Germany's invasion of Poland in 1939 the beginning of the War, that's only from the Western perspective since Japan's conquests in China flaring up into a major portion of the Asian front only solidified by the events of December 8th (7th in the West), 1941 shows that the war really was from 1937 to 1945, especially since it all began with the belligerent actions of Japan and ended with the shocks to the Japanese psyche of elements like the potential invasion of the nation by the US and Russia, the atomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Emperor renouncing the divinity of the Japanese royalty upon the nation's final surrender.) !<
!So with all that said, we know Yaku worked during "a" war, we saw her essentially as either a teen or a young woman in a flashback moment in chapter 75...but the truth is, we never fully got when that was or how old she was when that occurred and if she actually was a doctor in "that war". If Yaku was born in 1930, then she would be 7 when the war started; and 15 by the time the war ended. It's hard to tell how old she was when she was a war doctor and met her husband and hopefully we'll find out someday...but considering the little we get here and what her drugs were doing...it's sort of a shock that Japan lost the war considering they had Yakuzen drugs on their side. For all we know, Yaku was probably just doing drug research for the sake of drug research and it wasn't about the Japanese cause; there were many critics and anti-war people in Japan during the war that were prominent and notable including inventor of the Zero plane Jiro Hoshikori and film director Akira Kurosawa. Except...she was helping soldiers, healing and even improving them, and the idea of what kind of "man" she preferred in her youth feels like someone that personified the idea of powerful, loyal Japanese masculinity that was prevalent pre-1945. We're lucky that she has aged beyond that and doesn't want Rentarou as such, but considering the little we do hear here and what we know, the factor that Yaku may not have been someone of good morals in her youth (though considering a later chapter, it is possible that she and her husband mellowed in older age which probably showed they did reflect on what they had been through ultimately) is something we do have to keep in mind, especially if she was a doctor and making drugs in "that war".!<
Next Time: Any girl could do it. (walk and chew gum at the same time? [shrugs])
