We do not watch Esports for the Coach

Discussion

Imagine it is Game 5 in the World Finals, 6 hours into an intense back and forth game.

The team are setting up for Baron, wards are running low, and the pressure is starting to set in that one side will need to engage soon.

BOOM, there’s a coach’s pause and we see 6 ads, the analyst desk talking about the state of the game, it goes to a 5 minute countdown timer.

The beauty of League Esports is the tension that builds in these moments.

This stuff may work in American Football, but that is a sport built on a pauses. We already have halftime and quarter times etc, because it is BUILT into the system of having games in series form. There are pauses already, in between games.

I think we need to ask ourselves a simple question.

Is this better or worse for viewership?

You are building in a point in the game for viewers to click off. Let us reconsider this as a community.

We don’t watch Esports to see the coach’s impact mid game. That is for in between the games in the series and their impact in draft.
