What is THE movie that Mauler could watch and review that would put the “media diet” argument to rest?
Like most of us on this sub, I consider Mauler’s (and EFAP’s) content to be entertaining and insightful. However, I think he tends to stick to analyzing the most popular films from franchises that most would categorize as “normie” cinema. This has led to comments like “Mauler won’t review this because it doesn’t have superheroes or lightsabers in it” or “Mauler needs to watch some films that were made for adults/smart people”. While I think these comments are kind of pretentious and miss the point of what Mauler and EFAP are attempting to convey with their analyses, I also will admit that I selfishly would really like a spotlight on films (or tv) that are more thought provoking and less mainstream. I don’t care much for an in-depth review on Jurassic Turd: The Next Dino, Tron: Ares, or whatever garbage that DC and Marvel pump out next. I would much rather see them cover films like they have recently with The Iron Giant and The Fly; films that have had an influence on the overall landscape of the medium. Even their coverage of bad media like the Knives Out movies has been incredibly interesting to me because they are going against the grain of contemporary film discussion, but with smaller films disconnected from massive franchises.
The channel associated with EFAP that I think does this the best is Capital-O Pinions. Their streams manage to be incredibly perceptive while also casting a wide net on the media being covered. It could be a classic Disney animation one week and then a recently released horror film like Nosferatu or Hereditary the next. Maintaining that balance between audience-pleasing film and creator-pleasing film is one of their strong suits.
With all that being said, I would like to know what could be reviewed by Mauler and EFAP to cast away that attitude. It could be a movie that they have an interest in or one that is revered by the film discussion community that they could potentially dislike.
