AITA for bringing up that I’ve been paying my boyfriend’s mortgage during an argument?
I (29F) have been with my boyfriend (25M) for almost 5 years. Earlier this year, I moved out of my childhood home and started staying with him. At the same time, he lost one of his jobs and fell behind on his mortgage and debt. I stepped in because I love him and I saw a future with him.
For the past 7 months, I have been paying his mortgage, our groceries, and sometimes part of his debt. He covers the electricity and WiFi, which is much less than what I pay. I never held it against him because I make more and I truly wanted to help him get back on his feet.
The issue is communication. He shuts down during disagreements. He grew up without healthy emotional support and tends to take any attempt at discussion as a personal attack. When we argue, he goes silent instead of talking things through. I have tried many times to communicate my feelings calmly, but the silent treatment has been a recurring problem.
The fight that triggered everything happened recently. I am insecure about my cooking. I try my best and sometimes he compliments it, but I know I’m not amazing. One day he was sick and I made pospas for the first time. It turned out yellow because of the ingredient I used, but he said it tasted good and would love for me to cook it again.
Later on, when we were with my friends, he joked about it and made fun of the color in a way that embarrassed me. I told him privately after that it hurt my feelings, but his response was that I “can’t take a joke.” I felt dismissed.
Yesterday, the topic came up again and I was already frustrated. During the argument, I threw an empty plastic bottle in the hallway out of anger. He told me not to throw things in his house. Hearing him say his house hit a nerve. In the heat of the moment I said, “Your house? The one I’ve been paying for the past 7 months?”
He got angry and said I was “keeping score.” I honestly wasn’t trying to. I have never used the financial situation against him before. The words only came out because it felt like he didn’t see us as a team, like I was just a guest who should be grateful to be there.
We have not spoken for almost two days. The silence is heavy and painful. I am starting to feel this relationship is not healthy for either of us. I am thinking about moving out because I don’t want to live like this.
So now I’m questioning myself. AITA for saying that during the argument?
