Thinking about a Canon R8 + 50mm 1.8 for portraits. good call?
Hey everyone, Long story short: I’m looking to step back into photography as a hobby (rather than a job) and would love some opinions from this community.
Here’s where I’m at: I started photographing when I was around 15, but it was never a “pro” level camera just a passion piece. Now I’m 33 and want to get back into it, mostly to relieve work stress and have fun. I’m planning to pick up the Canon EOS R8 paired with a 50 mm f/1.8 lens. My main use case will be portraits (probably ~95% of what I do). I also enjoy editing/processing later on, so I want something that gives me plenty of good material to work with.
My questions: Does this setup make sense for portraits for someone in my position—i.e., returning to photography, want good quality, but not chasing pro gigs? With that gear, can I expect sharp pictures reliably (especially of people, where you want eyes in focus, decent depth, etc.)? What would I lose if I instead decided to go with the Canon EOS R50 (with the same 50mm lens) rather than the R8? And any pitfalls I should be aware of (lens choice, focus accuracy, habits/tools for getting sharp portraits, etc.). If you have alternative suggestions (body or lens) that might suit my budget and purpose better, I’d appreciate those too.
Thanks in advance for any help and personal experiences you share!
