why are there hundreds of different guns when they all basically work the same?

I'm not asking why there's rifles, sniper rifles, pistols, and smgs. I'm asking why are there 100s of different rifled, 100s of different pistols, 100s of different smgs. why does a ump AND a P90 AND a mp4 AND a Uzi AND a bizon exist
