Is it safe to assemble a PC on a PVC mat?

Hi, I want to prepare the best I can, I forgot to buy the bracelet though. I have an Ikea laminated desk with metal legs with plastic ends, on top of it there's 5mm thick PVC mat covering the entire surface, and then on top of it I have a large glass panel but I thought I'd remove before assembly? Idk if glass or PVC is safer. I don't have a carpet, but I have a plastic mat on the floor, it's kinda electrostatic because dust particles like clinging to it, idk if it's dangerous. The floor itself is plastic panels or whatever they are. I have a lot of cardboard, I can stand on it and build on it. I have foam shoes like crocs if it changes anything.

Also when grounding myself, should I just touch any metal, or does it have to be a metal device that's plugged in and turned on?
