Need advice: Hong Kong, Macau, Shenzhen & Guangzhou trip late December/January, good idea?

Need your help and opinion.

I’m thinking of flying from Budapest to Guangzhou around Dec 27 – Jan 6, with roughly 9 days to visit Hong Kong, Macau and Shenzhen, leaving a bit of time for Guangzhou before flying home. The idea is to go straight to Hong Kong first, then continue through Macau and Shenzhen back toward Guangzhou. I’d like to spend New Year’s Eve in Hong Kong, do some sightseeing, walking, relaxing, and enjoy the warmer weather compared to Europe.

I’m still unsure though.. December’s getting close and my other idea is a Portugal road trip. I’ve read mixed opinions about visiting during that time, some people loved it, others said it was booring, too crowded or overpriced.

So what do you think, is it worth doing this trip now, or better to skip it and save it for another time with more of China? Tnx in advance.
