Esquie's personality from intro

Anyone finding Esquie's tone and personality slightly more ominous/mysterious and like I don't know sarcastic? from the intro scene only to be more of a kind/goofy character ever since he joined the party (like him barfing up wine after Sciel buttered him up)? What happened to the whole riddles thing?
