At a life crossroads: choosing between love and a sense of home
Hi ladies,
I’m 33 (soon to be 34) and would really appreciate hearing from women who’ve been through something similar, especially those with more life experience and perspective.
I’m feeling deeply torn between two things that both matter to me enormously.
I’ve been with my fiancé for seven years, living together for five. He’s an incredible man: kind, emotionally intelligent, grounded, responsible, trustworthy, and loving. We share tasks at home equally, we truly love and respect each other, and I honestly couldn’t ask for a better partner.
However, we live in Andalusia (southern Spain), where he’s from and runs a family business. I moved here from a northern country (I offered myself to relocate without knowing what it really means to recolate), and over the past five years I’ve realized how much I miss the atmosphere, nature, and culture I grew up with: the quiet, the greenery, personal space, and the deeper sense of rootedness and connection to my ancestors and my grandmother.
Here, I often feel overstimulated because there is so much noise, chaos, and social intensity for my nature. Even though I try to focus on gratitude, I often catch myself mentally criticizing the environment and feeling out of place. When I go for a walk, I catch negative thoughts running in my mind. I’ve come to see how important “home” and my roots are to me, something I didn’t fully understand when I decided to move.
We’ve talked a lot about this, but my fiancé doesn’t want to move right now for practical reasons. His business is here, and my freelance work is still stabilizing. We’re even considering finding a quieter area nearby, but part of me fears it won’t change the deeper sense of disconnection. He is open to the idea of moving to my country one day and spending every summer there, maybe even traveling by a camper. That sounds lovely, but I’m not sure if it would be enough for me deep down.
And so I’m stuck in this painful in-between. I love this man deeply and would love to build a life and family together. But I also feel that the place we live slowly drains me.
It’s heartbreaking because I don’t want to lose either the relationship or the sense of inner peace that comes from being in a place that feels like home.
I’ve started IFS therapy (Internal Family Systems), which is helping me explore the parts of me that are in conflict, but the emotions are still very strong. I’m beginning to realize that there’s probably no path without pain. It’s more about choosing which pain leads to growth and long-term alignment.
I’d love to hear from women who’ve gone through a similar inner conflict. How did you find clarity? How did you make peace with your decision? How did you know which “loss” was the one you could live with?
I’m also curious to hear how you approached such complex decisions. Did clarity come naturally over time, or did you have to push yourself to choose? What helped you get through it?
Over the past five years, I’ve gone through a lot of inner struggle trying to find the courage or the answer, but constant overthinking has only exhausted me. I’m not looking for pressure or judgement, I’ve already pressured myself enough. I’m just hoping to hear from women who’ve found gentler, wiser ways to approach life’s crossroads ❤️
