60% through the Contortionist - what should I be expecting?

I'd love if I could get some feedback here, without spoilers.

Like the title says - I'm 60% through the Contortionist - first book in the Harrow Faire series.

It's quite...odd. At this point, I only read fantasy/fantasy romance/romantasy. And this does not appear to be that.

It's obvious that something will happen between Cora and Simon. It's obvious that he is insane because of things that have been done to him, or things he's been forced to do. I suspect that through loving her, his humanity will start to return to him. That's all well and good, and the type of thing is normally be super into, but I'm not sure about the rest of this story.

Does it become more fantasy? There's a kind of magic here, but this whole thing seems way more supernatural/thriller/horror than fantasy. Is there an overarching bad guy that she has to beat to save the world or whatever? Does she find a family she didn't know she was missing? (Her current friends barely count imo) Are there battles she loses and setbacks she faces? Does she turn out to have powers of her own?

I'm not sure of those questions are rhetorical or not lol. I'm just trying to see if I should keep going with this. It's so far off from what I typically read.
