Question regarding custom lamps: Painting Bases & Caps

Hello everyone! For those of you who paint your bases and caps, is there any kind of special paint that you use or are you spray painting them? I've got a few silvers I want to make a bit more interesting. Just want to make sure I'm going about it in the best way.
