[32 M] Metronidazole for diarrhea in rural Nepal
32, Male, 6'2'', 170lbs, no smoking, no relevant hx, no allergies
I'm currently travelling in rural Nepal. About 2.5 days ago I began experiencing severe diarrhea, explosive, completely liquid, 12-15 times per day. I've stayed fairly well hydrated so far, but naturally I still want to make it stop as soon as possible.
I've taken a few bismuth subsalicylate tablets which helped a little, but I'm all out now. Today, I found a small pharmacy that gave me 10 tablets of Protogyl DF which is composed of 400mg of metronidazole and 400mg of dioloxanide furoate.
I took one of these pills, but upon further research it doesn't seem like the right thing to be taking. I get the sense that azithromycin would be a more standard prescription in my case.
That said, I took the one pill about 8 hours ago now and I haven't had a BM since and I feel fairly good. But only having 9 pills left, I don't have enough for a standard course and I don't want to breed any superbugs in my gut. Should I keep the 9 pills I have left or lay off?
Haven't felt any adverse side effects and I'm generally not allergic to anything.
