Tom rides a dragoncycle! Eclipsa has a date with Globgor? | Wraith's Journal #56 [S4E13 - Boy and His DC-700XE + Monster and the Queen]
Once again, splitting this episode off on its own so the next episode can have its big moment!
Marco and Tom ride dragoncycles with the crew and Tom learns and important lesson! Eclipsa meets Globgor but something's not right... Sounds fun and.. well actually I'm not sure what to think about Globgor at this point in the story. But we'll find out!
~
Marco, Kelly, Hekapoo, Talon and Quirky - the Kill Devil Pass Riders Club - are having (age appropriate) drinks before their annual ride. Marco didn't tell them he invited Tom, who has never ridden a dragoncycle before.
It's time for the ride, but Marco stays behind to help Tom bond with his newly-bought and very young dragoncycle.
~Is this place on Mewni or what? Either way, I call it the Badlands. Once again, I love seeing different places in this universe!
~Also, all the different dragoncycles everyone has are really cool! Kelly's is the most unique. Marco and Tom's outfits are nice and fitting for this special occasion, too.
Tom and Hampton (Tom's dragoncycle) are having trouble getting along, so Marco teaches them to trust each other.. enough. Marco and Tom eventually get flying to join the others, and Marco mentions that he and Kelly are no longer 'breakup buddies'. Marco suggests it was an amicable decision...
...Kelly, meanwhile, is telling Hekapoo the same, except she seems shocked and bitter about it.
~What even was 'breakup buddies'? It seemed lacking in an actual definition, even among Marco and Kelly. I will say though, even though I didn't ship them, it seems odd that their relationship was so.. fleeting, and it progressed in the way it did. I wish they had ended up as friends instead of.. whatever this was. It just seems odd, to say the least.
Reunited with the group, everyone heads for Kill Devil Pass to do their big jump. On the way, Tom is still having trouble working with Hampton. Hampton sees some wild dragoncycles and joins them despite Tom's attempts to get him to stay with the group. Tom feels a bit bad that Hampton has to deal with him.
~Wild dragoncycles! Again, where is this? How did Marco meet Nachos.. in the Neverzone?
They arrive at Kill Devil Pass.. which is a very dangerous-looking canyon with.. devil fists that come out of the sides and attempt to hit anything passing through? (I should stop questioning the weirdness of this world) And there's ramps at either end.
The riders each take initiative to go, but Marco keeps giving Tom (who is very nervous) outs, culminating in this conversation:
Marco: Look, buddy. I don't know if you're ready for a jump like this just yet.
Tom: Oh, nah, we got this.
Marco: Tom, seriously.
Tom: I'm doing the jump, Marco.
Marco: But why? Nobody's pressuring you to do this.
Tom: You're doing it. You always do cool stuff like this.
Marco: I'm not the cool one. You are!
Tom: Yeah, that's what I thought! But then I actually realized that I don't really do anything. So I bought a dragon-cycle, and I'm gonna do this terrifying jump.
Quirky takes his turn, and intentionally gets hit by a fist, leaving a 'devil mark' (he's fine, by the way). Everyone is excited for him.
Marco: Tom, I really like the idea of me being the cool one, but... Dude, just do the stuff you want to do. Then it doesn't matter if it's cool or not. So I'm gonna jump this cliff. Not because it's cool, but because I like jumping cliffs!
~Where to start. Does Tom literally not do anything when he's not with Star? We already see this a bit from Junkin Janna, and we did see him playing video games by himself when Marco visited him in Naysaya. Tom did talk about not really having m/any friends. Even if he and Star were the perfect couple, it's not really good to not have a life of your own. Like, does he have any royal duties? Does he have any interests?
~Also, does Tom look up to Marco? I think I've asked this before. He was quite mean to Marco when they first met, but Marco kept slapping some sense into him. Marco's the one who goes on adventures with Star and does dangerous/cool stuff like this. Tom is just.. not that. I mean, I look up to Marco. He is kind of awesome. Good for both of them that they're helping each other through this.
Marco does the jump and lands it perfectly ("Man, that guy is so cool" ~Tom). Tom and Hampton line up, but Tom notices the wild dragoncycles again.
Tom: Wow. They're so free. You just wanna be up there, don't ya?
Hampton: (affirmative whimper)
Tom: What are we doing? You don't wanna do this jump. I don't wanna do this jump. Hampton, I'm sorry. You should do what you want. [removes Hampton's collar]
Hampton: (confused growl)
Tom: Be free!
Hampton flies into the sky and joins the wild dragoncycles
Tom: Have fun with those wild dragoncycles, buddy.
Tom is alone at the end of the pass without a dragoncycle. He has his own way to get across: he uses his Demon powers and flies across the canyon. Tom almost makes it, but gets hit at the last second.
Tom is badly bruised, but the rest of the crew are impressed and give him a vest, even inviting him back for next year. Tom makes up his mind:
Tom: I think I'm just gonna do what I want. But.. but no. I'm.. I'm definitely not gonna do this again.
~I think Tom's slowly finding himself. Always good to reach out of your comfort zone every now and then.
~Also good for Tom that he let Hampton be free. Tom understood that it's best for both of them. Hampton gets to do what he wants, Tom gets another chance to find his own way forward. It's what we've all been doing here this season. Choose your own path, let others choose theirs.
~Fun episode. I like that Marco helped Tom through this and that Tom grew a little bit. You don't have to be 'cool', just be yourself. And once again, we get to see a new place - always good.
~
Star is journaling in her secrets closet (why! it must smell awful in here!) Glossaryck is taking some of her stuff, which annoys Star, and Star notices the Book of Spells fragment is missing!
Eclipsa is descending some stairs to an underground waterway while carrying a gift (are we under.. Butterfly Castle?). She rows away in a small boat until a giant emerges from the water!
Eclipsa: Oh, you.
Globgor: What took you so long?
Eclipsa: I had to find the perfect box for your gift.
Globgor: Oh, no, no, wait. I'm taking you to a secret place.
~We finally get to meet Globgor! After a year of hearing his name, and seeing him menacing in the crystal for months, we finally get to see the real Globgor! He seems.. normal? Just like a nice guy.
Globgor and Eclipsa kiss, and Globgor shrinks down to humanoid size so he actually fits in the cave and Eclipsa's boat. They sail into the light and down a river, leaving an intact Butterfly Castle behind.
~Evidently, we're in a memory of sorts. Past Mewni seems.. peaceful.
Eclipsa and Globgor playfully banter about Globgor no longer eating Mewmans, and have some fun with Globgor growing large and small.
~They get along so well. They're like the perfect couple (Star and Marco still have their lives ahead of them). And at what point did Globgor commit to being a vegetarian (also to what degree is this 'no longer eating Mewmans' and 'not eating meat'?)?
On shore, Eclipsa retrieves a skeleton guitar ('a surprise'!) and starts playing:

Globgor has a surprise for Eclipsa, too, but his picnic is missing. He blames the Mewman miners, shifts to giant size and goes off after them. Globgor reaches into the mine and retrieves.. a large red gem! Globgor was just playing around.
Globgor presents the gem to Eclipsa, but notes that it's "not real" - he caught on that Eclipsa has been up to something (Butterfly Castle, peaceful wilderness, etc.).
Globgor: Wait. Are we in my mind? Right now?
Eclipsa: (playfully) ...Yes.
Globgor: Oh... that's creepy, boo!
Eclipsa: I thought you'd be happy to see me.
Globgor: Well, I am. But I don't want to be in my mind! I mean, where's my body?
Eclipsa: Your body is still trapped inside of one of Rhombulus's crystals.
Globgor: Bummer. Then where are you?
Eclipsa: Well, I'm free.. basically.
Globgor: So how'd you get in here?
Eclipsa: I used a spell!
Globgor: And, uh, Meteora?
Eclipsa: She's wonderful! She has my eyes and your beautiful fangs. And she just learned how to crawl on the ceiling!

Eclipsa: It's less adorable when she vomits from up there.
Globgor: That's my girl! I wish I could see her.

Globgor: What do you mean?
Eclipsa: [opens the small gift box she brought] My mother created a spell that'll break your crystal, and I've done all of the steps except for the last.
inside the box is a rooster with a ribbon tied around its beak
Eclipsa: All that's left is for me to pull the ribbon from the beak of this rooster to make it crow. Then you'll be set free.
Globgor: You're so weird.
Eclipsa: Are you ready to see your daughter?
Globgor: Of course! But I don't know. I mean, don't the Mewmans still hate me?
Eclipsa: You're.. controversial.
Globgor: Even if the people let me come back, they'd just be waiting for me to mess up. And maybe I'm still not over what happened. Maybe I'd prove them right somehow.
Eclipsa: I want you with us.
Globgor: Can you tell me, without a doubt, that the kingdom is ready for me?
Eclipsa: [sighs] I don't know...
they embrace
Globgor: When the kingdom is ready, you'll know. Then maybe, I'll be ready, too?
Eclipsa: [tearing up] I hate it when you're right.
Globgor and Eclipsa kiss. Eclipsa returns to the physical plane. She's at Monster Temple in Globgor's crystal room. She's crying freely. Eclipsa's spell ends and she floats down to the floor.
~...We keep getting one emotional scene after another this season. Star and Marco on the verge of realizing their destiny with the Blood Moon. Marco and Star affirming their friendship for life. Eclipsa and Globgor being so close, but so far away.
~This is the real Globgor. Not the "Prince of Darkness", not the narratives about him. He acknowledges his past of eating Mewmans, but he's moved past that. He and Eclipsa are very much in love - all they want is to be together and be a family with their daughter. But the kingdom isn't ready for them.
~Mewmans and Monsters have fought, they've committed horrible atrocities against each other for centuries. In the midst of it all, these two found each other and just wanted peace so they could be together. Would the kingdoms ever be ready for them?
~Ever since Eclipsa became Queen, she's been caught between trying to be the best Queen for the people, and trying to bring her family back together - and the two remain in conflict. Globgor's right that he's thinking about the kingdoms... is it wrong that Eclipsa still wants him free even though she knows he'll be "controversial", to say the least?
Star arrives, very angry. Star notes the 'crystal pulverizing spell' in the Book of Spells, and confronts Eclipsa about freeing Globgor. Eclipsa admits that neither Globgor, nor the kingdom, are ready for him to be free. Star also confronts Eclipsa about stealing the Book fragment. Eclipsa apparently spied on Star's mind to find it.
Star: That is... [shivers] ...so creepy, Eclipsa.
Eclipsa: Yes, people keep saying that! Is there any way you can forgive me?
Star: Are you seriously worried about what I think? Eclipsa, why don't you ever worry about what your people think?
Eclipsa: My people? They haven't even given me a proper coronation.
Star: That's your excuse? Okay, fine. I'll give you a coronation.
Eclipsa: What?
Star: Yup, that's right. Then they'll have to accept you, and you will have to lead them. Maybe then you'll think twice before you get up to all this witchy stuff again.
Eclipsa: [sighs] Yes, I suppose you're right.
Star: I know what it's like to miss someone when.. when you love them. You do crazy things. All right! Glad we had this talk. [she leaves]
The rooster walks around as Eclipsa looks up at Globgor.
~Looks like Eclipsa will finally have to choose whether she'll be a Queen for her people or a Queen for herself. In her journals, she wrote about making spells 'for herself', and we've seen this constant conflict where she tries to do right by the people but she's still working for herself behind the scenes. What will it finally be?
~And Star's bit about 'missing someone when you love them and doing crazy things' - where did that come from? What has
Star been thinking about that she's not saying? Is she thinking about Marco? I can't imagine who else that might be about.
~It's a bittersweet episode. Eclipsa and Globgor's date was beautiful... except it wasn't real. Is one still lucid in a crystal? I can only imagine how much both Eclipsa and Globgor miss each other.
~
We're reaching a boiling point. I appreciate the fun side adventure before we get all serious for a while. Marco gets to take the lead and shows Tom the way to make decisions that are best for everyone.
Tom's really come a long way. He went from not caring what others thought of him or how he affected them, to letting Hampton make his own choice. Now, Tom just needs to find his own way forward.
Add Eclipsa and Globgor's moment to the tally of emotional moments this season. That's one thing I've come to appreciate about Season 4. The story is very intense. I didn't join the fandom until 2018 after Season 3 had finished airing, so Season 4 is kind of 'my' season in that I got to experience it with everyone else. I guess I connected with it the most out of the 4, and still do to this day.
Eclipsa's finally gonna get a coronation. Will she make the right choice? Will the people accept her? Will it all go off without a hitch? One more big push... right?
