what offers can someone who got straight 5s get for uni

My friend is looking into unis and does a levels but all the good ones have a high requirement of 6s in English language. How do I advise them to resit in June and if not can they get some form of clemency in their application since they used to do well in school but lost a parent in gcse szn?
