Are Nairs Shudras?
No, Nairs by no classification can be termed as Shudras. Nairs are the Kshatriyas of Kerala. They are a Forward(General) caste community in Kerala. They have been called as Nākas/Näkars in Sangam literature. Now indigenous Nairs were the Nakas/Näkars present in Sangam Literature and were descendants of Ananta as per legends. The word Nair originates from Nagar/Naga as it's traditionally documented that Nairs are scion of Nagas. It's also pretty evident as Nairs have exclusive Nagaradhna- the worship of Nagas.
Nairs have always followed Hinduism. They were followers of Kaulachara, and were proper Agamacharis. Nāgarāja worship along with worship of Shiva, Kaali (and all her forms), Vettakorumakan, Shasta etc ugra devtas were a common symbol of Nair. A faction of Nairs were vedacharis, hence dwija and wore poonol through the traditional samskara of Upanayana.
Nairs were traditionally warriors, artistocrats and rulers of Kerala. There are lots of accounts on bravery and marital skills of Nairs, for which you just have to read some history books. Looking at some random blogspot written by some Toddy tapper Ezhava or a random video by a Missionary kurangan won’t give you right information. While most people are aware of the martial traditions of the Nairs, which already qualify us as Kshatriyas. The detailed Martial Tradition of Nairs will be discussed later on.
Traditions of Nairs align closely with the descriptions of that of Kshatriya practices found in Smritis. Lets explore few details.
1- Prohibition for Kshatriyas doing farming or Trading.
Based on Mahabharata a conversation between Yudhishtra and Bheema Bheema explains that trading and farming are reserved for Vaishyas and is not permitted for Kshatriyas.
Nairs were strictly prohibited from transplanting and ploughing the land and as inferred from the above verse, it can be inferred that it was a strict Kshatriya custom, even followed by the Nairs. asserting our kshatriyahood.
2- Connection to Lineage
Most of the Nairs are Nagas that belong to the Suryavamsha lineage, but several families like Kolathri etc are Nagas from Chandravamsha lineage. Hence collective term of Nagavamshi is used to describe Nairs.
3- Requirement of Carrying Arms and Weapons.
According to smritis, only Kshatriya is allowed to carry Weapons.
As recorded by the travelers, Nairs were required as well as seen carrying Swords and Weapons.
4- Brahmins cannot accept danams from Shudras.
The smriti following namboothiris wouldn’t have taken danam if we were Sudras. Which implies we are Kshatriya only.
5- Marriage Customs
According manusmriti 3.44 during an Anuloma Vivaham between a Brahmana male and Kshatriya female, the bride is required to hold a arrow in her hand.
This exact practice was followed by Nairs in Kerala. Thus can be inferred that Kerala was very conservative in adhering the rules of Gods, validating our Kshatriya status as per smriti themselves.
6- Martial Traditions
Since ancient times, the Nairs have played a dominant role in Kerala’s martial community, as evidenced by numerous inscriptions, foreign accounts, and indigenous records. According to these accounts, along with contemporary archaeological findings, the Nairs have been a warrior community for over a millennium. When considering their ancestral lineage, which includes the Nagas, this antiquity extends even further. During the era of Cheraman Perumal, it was customary for kings to highlight the number of Nairs within their armies. The Chola dynasty referred to the Nairs as Vadunagas (Northern Nagas), acknowledging them as formidable adversaries. Greek historical records also mention the Nairs as a clan residing near the Aravalli Mountains. Two to three centuries later, the Ushvadatta inscription from Western India notes the dispatch of assistance to the Kshatriya Nairs of Malabar.
Martial tradition will be discussed in detail very soon.
The Britishers and Nair hatred campaign has been seen propagating that Nayars are shudras. However, it’s a mischievous attempt to instill negative opinion on proper Nayars who are not shudra in any form since they took part in battles, sacrificed life in the war against invaders and worked in the administration of the Kerala. These opinions are forced to manipulate the history of Nair community.
