Why do international students still come to the UK when it's clear it's not worth it?
I'm a British student who did a master's in computer science at a prestigious university. I managed to get a good graduate job and actually had a couple grad offers in my final year.
My course was like 90% international students wanting to come to the UK and work in high paying tech jobs at Google or Meta. Most of them have amazing academic credentials and have received the best grades from the best universities in their respective countries which already have very competitive academic systems.
I think literally single one of them failed to get a grad job in the UK. One of them got an unpaid internship where he is literally working like a slave for no money and didn't even get an offer for a paid role afterwards.
The job market is hard enough for UK grads, although most of my British friends who didn't have jobs last year after undergrad managed to get something by now. The job market would be 100000x harder for internationals so why on earth do so many still come?
The crazy thing is almost all of them have taken out massive loans just to afford to pay the tuition fees and many of them break their visa restrictions and work longer than they should doing deliveroo or in some warehouse just to make rent living with 6 other people in a flat.
The trope of international students being super rich buying penthouses in Mayfair and flying around in private jets is exceptionally rare. I found out that many of them use their parent's home as collateral for the loan which is fucking crazy.
No one is entitled to a grad job, least of all internationals who just landed in the country a few months ago with no understanding of British culture. And yet so many of them don't seem to understand this and are willing to bankrupt their families back home on a futile endeavour.
Either most international students simply don't understand how odds work, or they have been scammed by admissions consultants,
This isn't a hate post. Don't ruin your family's financial stability for something that just won't happen. Only if you're literally rich and can afford to study in the UK without thinking twice and assume you won't get a job is it worth it.
If you're an international student who needs to take out loans to come here... Please don't. Save your money.
