Quilt size recs needed for dialysis

My dad needs dialysis almost every other day. I wanted to make him a quilt for when he gets cold, but unsure if I should make a lap quilt (60×60) or if I should make a throw. He isn't tall, but is on the heavier side. He sits in a reclining armchair during dialysis, but the room is quite small, so the quilt can't be too big that it trips up my mom while she administers the treatment. Any insights/recs welcome.

FYI, I was planning on using the Cabins in the Valley Pattern and I do gave enough fabric for a throw, but kinda want to go with the lap size because it would be easier to quilt on my home sewing machine.
