Is it currently believed Homo sapiens caused the extinction of other humans directly?

Is the theory that we directly caused the extinction of other humans, like Neanderthals and Denisovans? As in purposely go out of our way to kill them to eliminate competition?

Or was it indirectly, as in we just outcompeted them?
