Lets talk about Linus and the LM for a moment.
I have seen way too many people with absolutely no knowledge spouting about LM and this Linus video.
Firstly, ASUS suck with liquid metal, that is not a secret, that particular machine was not a great example at all and the fact ASUS used a whole tube, the barrier sucked and Linus kept yeeting it. It really is no surprise that it failed.
Secondly, all the people now thinking that PTM is within a few degrees of LM. That testing was flawed. It was never checked if the factory application was even properly applied. Wanna argue about that? Take it to the ROG or Zephyrus subreds, they will tell you all about it.
Testing methodology was not explained at all, there was no locked fans, power limits or noise normalisation and he could have literally tested a borked OEM application vs a solid PTM application.
Laptops fans only kick in at certain temperatures, meaning both with LM and PTM the machine will still be shooting for the exact same thermal headroom. Without setting proper testing scenarios, you cannot just do random crap and claim one is better than the other. In the same way, you cannot judge every LM application and OEM on ASUS's standards. I have a Legion Pro 7i gen 10, It comes with PTM and a fully LM prepped heatsink including sticky gasket. CB23 runs at 210w on a BS2 Pro with PTM are about 100c on some cores, When swapped over to conductonaut extreme, same scenario... 81c. Just a few degrees right?
The Slim 5 with LM!
This is a detailed write up about a Legion Slim 5 I was given by Lenovo being swapped over to LM and thoroughly tested before and after using the exact same settings, fan curves and BS1 cooler. This is exactly how I use all my machines.
Full disclosure.
Using LM is not for everyone, not everyone wants to try and get peak performance out of their machine or lacks the skill to apply it and make it safe. It CAN be made safe, I've done it for near 5 years and know people who have been doing it longer than me. It can also last a long time when done correctly. My dad is using my 2021 A15 that I did with LM then refreshed that 2 years ago, he uses it most days and travels with it often. No leaks, no high temps.
If your laptop is a premium machine that comes with liquid metal on the CPU, it is there for a very good reason. If you open your machine to get peak performance back properly applying the right amount and removing the puddle that isn't needed, refreshing the gasket if you're unsure and properly mounting it. You will have a perfectly performing machine with cooler temperatures than PTM and higher wattages sustainable underload too.
That said, if you're scared of using LM, fair enough, don't start parroting misinformation when you have never gotten to grips with the material and how to use it. Accept LM is too daunting and just say that. PTM7950 is still a great TIM and extremely user friendly, anyone can use it risk free and it lasts a long time. Perfectly understandable.
