Flexible working

Question or Discussion

Tl;dr - going to put in a flexible working request, has anyone had managerial pushback?

Hi all,

Quick question about flexible working. I've worked in the ambulance service for 13 years in various roles, always worked full time, a mixture of days and nights. I'm 31, married and have no children, and I'm now a bottom of band 6 paramedic.

Over the last year I've found I'm struggling with the nights and finding the lack of sleep is affecting my decision making and making me very anxious (doubting my capabilities, feeling generally shit about decisions I made in the middle of the night when I'm tired, worrying that jobs are going to come back to bite me). None of these things have actually happened - I can see this for what it is - pure anxiety. I had 3 months off sick between May and Aug this year due to burnout and felt better when I came back, but I feel like the nights might be what is what is contributing to me feeling anxious and burnt out.

In the last week, I've been considering putting in a flexible working request, with a view to working only days or lates (latest finish time 0200). The station I work at does a mix of shifts and I'm going to put forward that I would work every other weekend (to still accrue some unsocial) and shifts during the week to equate to full time hours (so the change doesn't affect annual leave/maternity allowance/pension conts).

Long story short, has anyone here done this, despite not having dependents/caring responsibilities/other reason for change of hours? I'm worried about push back from management because my main reasoning is that I hate nights and the way they make feel me mentally. Thank you.
