Diamond breakfast cold food only?

Staying at a Doubletree in major Canadian city. Walked down to breakfast this morning and they told me I could only eat the cold food for free (fruit, croissant, toast). If I touched the hot food buffet I would be charged extra?

I just walked out. I’ve never had this experience before.
