Mom in ICU, 69, what a terrible disease

We had a feeling things weren't right as mom was getting more forgetful over the years (could've been something unrelated) and seemed to be getting worse quickly. Her general doctor recommended a scan due to her growing fatigue and that's when they found the thing deep into her brain. After 2 opinions the range of life was 5-18 months. Mom was very sad to hear the news. Inoperable due to how deep it was. Never heard Dad cry before.

She got her treatment at UCSF. Every day was a 1-3 hour a day journey each way to get her into the car, driving there, getting her out, and dealing with radiation/appointments. Dad (75) and us 3 kids helped spread the load out but man was it a grind. She become increasingly harder to move as my sister called it trying to transport 140 pounds of jello that you couldn't drop. She stopped chemo after day 10 or so because it (or maybe something else knowing what we know now) made her really unresponsive. Did 1 round of Avastin We got to radiation trip 23 of 30 days when things got worse.

After the doctors seeing her almost a borderline vegetable (wasn't much different to us from a week prior) they did some tests and apparently the tumor has grown and her brain is bleeding. She is in neurology ICU and I think options have now changed to how to we beat this to how do we make her comfortable to take home for final care.

Venting - I'm really surprised how we know so much yet so little about diseases like this. Chemo + radiation although I'm sure more technical now has been the method for as long as I can remember. Blasting her brain for weeks I'm shocked that not only it didn't kill the tumor but it grew. Given the low success rates for these I feel like modern medicine still has so much to learn.

Deeply sorry to anyone that has been through this. Sad for my mom as wife and I gave her a granddaughter 2 years ago and mom was so excited especially since it was a girl. Daughter was just starting to get to the playful age and they had a few great moments together but incredibly sad those pictures are going to be all the memories my daughter will have of her only living grandmother.

Much love to all.
