Elderly mother L5 injection
My 88 year old mother learned she has degenerative scoliosis which has been related to her extremely painful back pain for the last 3-4 years. She initially thought it was sciatica. She’s been on a cocktail of tramadol, gabapentin, lidocaine patches, and OTC pain relievers the last few years. Nothing really works and they work less over time.
The doctor said back surgery is out given her age and the nature of her scoliosis. They recommended starting with injections. She has an appointment for an L5 injection next week with a follow up a few weeks later. What can she expect before and after the injection? They already said stop taking NSAIDs and vitamins for 7 days. Is there anything else she should try to alleviate the pain in addition to the injection?
