Took a long time to get diagnosed
Just wanted to share my story about GD if this helps anyone advocate for themselves-
33 FTM and currently 33 wks.
It's been a rough pregnancy with lots of stress and anxiety, a lot of it coming from difficulty trying to concieve and fearful of not having a happy, healthy baby.
I spot checked my glucose in 1st trimester since I knew I was higher risk (both Type I and Type II in my immediate family- so I've seen my family members really struggle with the hardships of managing diabetes). Nothing crazy, I poked myself maybe 3 different times if I felt funny after meals. All looked great.
Backstory- I was showing some signs of insulin resistance (PCOS-type symptoms making it difficult to concieve, which was being looked at by my reproductive endocrinologist) and I was due to get more testing but then got pregnant. So concerns about BG was already on my mind.
1st trimester levels were always great. Around week 24 I noticed some BIG spikes with some symptoms after meals.
OB ordered the 1hr at 24 wks. Failed horribly.
Took the 3 hr, BARELY passed. Like just by a total of 1 point passed.
ObGyn at the time said- don't worry about it, you're fine. And that was that. I felt SO dismissed.
My gut was telling, no, I'm actually still worried about this.
This was the catalyst for me to switch practices to a midwifery practice. Which took some time.
Midwives had me tracking glucose 4 times a day for a couple weeks. My fasting was creeping upwards and I was still getting (much worse) spikes with moderate carb heavy meals.
Days I followed a traditional GD meal plan, things looked decently good.
Midwives referred me to MFM with this information.
And without question, MFM said yeah, with your risk factors and the fact I barely passed the 3hr, we need to treat as GD because I still had so much more time to go in the pregnancy- and GD doesn't peak until later.
Good news is it's still diet controlled. Baby is still a normal size and in 50th percentile.
But I am SO thankful I listened to my gut and decided to make changes early- even when my original MDs said not to worry.
It's so stressful to go through this and I had lots of teara/breakdown moments early on. But I'm SO thankful it's monitored now.
