Discussion with a teacher about the case

Discussion 🗣

I was in English class—I’m French—and we were doing presentations on different well-known hashtags. At some point, there was a #MeToo presentation . In France, we say “Balance ton porc” (literally “Expose your pig,” lol).

The teacher (a man) was reasonable enought lets say. At first. In the discussion between him and the group, he seemed to support woman speaking out, harsher sentences for rape of minors, and believed Polanski was a serial rapist of minors( in France its not well believed sadly enought ). But at one point, the conversation started going downhill, bc he basically said, “I’ll play devil’s advocate, but have there been false accusations? Women taking advantage of the movement, especially against rich and famous men, to get money or else? ”

The group basically replied, “Yes, there are always some abuses in any movement, but it’s rare.” The teacher said he knew it was rare, but he’d like a specific example. The group didn’t have one. He end up saying “The Depp/Heard case.”

It’s worth noticing that the group didn’t really seem much agree with him, but they didn’t push back much beyond saying, “It’s hard to know… you know… we can’t really say she lied 100%… some things are true, some are false… same with Johnny Depp.” The teacher didn’t say anything back at it.

I was boiling inside. Beyond the fact that she was clearly abused and that Depp is truly an abuser, this man didn’t even know what he was talking about. She never used the #MeToo hashtag, never accused Depp of violence before he dragged her to court, and she never wanted his money because she actually refused his money, seeking protection in 2016.

And the way he seemed SO eager to bring Amber up in the discussion—it was an obsession. Yet he didn’t seem like a hardcore Depp supporter, because he didn’t insist after the group made this somewhat knee-jerk “both sides, mutual abuse” comment.

This case has clearly infiltrated everyone’s minds. Apparently, a lot of ordinary people are convinced it was proven that she lied and that she used #MeToo—when in reality, it started in 2016, before #MeToo, and she wasent the first to ask for money.

Poor Amber heard, i end up thinking the same thing. I dont think anyone has a réputation that much ruined. Well, if iit was only réputation...but you know what im saying.

I wanted to share it here.

Now i look at him differently...

Ps : three boys laught at the mention of " the depp/heard case".
