Volunteering. Animal shelter/Town cleanup or Human-first service?

❔ Question

Hi all, I'd appreciate some feedback on the decision I'm making. For some background, I am an applicant this cycle and have been fortunate enough to get 2 MD IIs so far. To me, the very clear weak spot in my application is lack of community service. In fact, I have 0 of it. I volunteered as an EMT instructor at my old program but that's about it for volunteer experience.

My issue is, I talk a lot about wanting to serve my community as a physician. And that's true, that is something I care very deeply about, but I don't have much to show for my words. Anyways, I have some extra time in my schedule that I can put towards volunteering and I was wondering what opportunity might best fill the gap in my application. I think I would have a lot of fun volunteering at my local animal shelter / doing town-based activities like cleanups and gardening etc., but I'm worried that those activities don't directly involve doing service towards people. Am I being overly pedantic or is this justified? On the other end, I could try something like volunteering for a soup kitchen, something with a more human-first focus to really back up my commitment to the underserved. I feel it could give me a better message when I write an update letter to schools, and help round out my application better than other community service.

To summarize, I would probably enjoy the non-human volunteering (gardening/animal shelter) more, but I think the human volunteering would fit better with what I've talked about in my applications so far.

Please let me know any thoughts in the comments below! Feedback greatly appreciated!
