Idea: Hikikomori outreach/therapy via gaming

Seeking Advice / Problem Solving

I was watching a video recently on the mental health/therapeutic benefits of gaming, and another one on Japan's hikikomori and 8050 crisis (80-yo parents caring for 50-yo shut-in children), and I got to thinking... has anyone tried some sort of outreach using video games as a way to slowly bridge the gap for hikikomori to basically get some exposure (and general) therapy in this way?

Like, I'm picturing something like a Minecraft server of Animal Crossing island or similar chill, cozy collaborative game setting where things could start with limited/no-comms parallel play, moving to text chat to voice chat to video chat and so forth, with the gameplay providing a focal point to reduce the anxiety of communication expectations, etc., while also providing a creative/expressive outlet through which mental/psychological issues could be worked through (aspirational roleplay, artistic expression, etc.).

(As an American with less-than-jouzu Japanese skills, I could see an additional benefit of reducing language barriers, which is also nice.)

Anyone else have any ideas/insight?
