Tips on making friends

Social Struggles

Hi there, as the title suggests I've been struggling to form friendships. I have some acquaintances here and there and have small conversations with my coworkers while we're at work, but beyond that I don't have any close friendships. I've tried being close to a couple of different people I used to work with at our school, but one of them graduated so I don't see them at school anymore, and they can take up to at least a week to respond to my texts. They always seem happy to hear from me when they do respond, so I'm guessing there's just something going on in their personal life. I don't take it personally, I'm just bummed that I haven't been able to talk to them much because we've had some really fun conversations and lots of laughs together.

I'm not quite sure if I could be doing something wrong or not. I have tried engaging with my roommates at our house in a friendly way, but I'm not entirely certain if I necessarily want to form a friendship with them, as I worry that maybe that could muddy some boundaries of mine. I could be wrong though. I don't know a lot of the people upstairs that I live with, I know their names but not really them as people, and I feel pretty shy about talking to them, and not really sure if I should talk to them beyond a roommate-dynamic sort of way.

I joined a club hoping I'd make some friends, and I've been in the same choir for my third year now, but I still haven't managed to become close with anyone. That's partly for reasons I can control/manage such as anxiety about going to class (I've missed a couple of class sessions because of this, regrettably) and other issues like financial issues and work schedule conflicts preventing me from joining club meetings on a regular basis.

I'm not sure what all to do besides work on my anxiety. I feel like sometimes I mask to some extent without even trying to which is really frustrating because it's not something that's very sustainable to me, if that makes sense. Like eventually I might do or say something seen as weird or I simply can't keep up with everyone socially in some way (aside from being present for class), or I might eventually get comfortable enough that it becomes maybe more obvious that I'm autistic, sometimes I'll even tell the person I'm getting more comfortable with that I am. I'm not entirely sure if I'm even good at masking though because even if I feel like I'm only showing one side of myself, I still don't form close bonds. I'm not sure why.

If anyone has helpful tips or insight on making friends, masking, or even on how to unmask, that'd be really helpful. I've been trying to unmask more and more, like wearing alternative clothes that feel more "me" and allowing myself to engage with my special interests more and more. I think that may be a step in the right direction.
