Trying to Get My Life Together After $21k in Credit Card Debt... Advice?
Hi everyone,
I’m 23 and recently went through a rough patch after losing my job. During that time, I ended up relying on my credit cards to cover rent, bills, and honestly some unnecessary spending too. I’ve now accumulated about $21,300 in credit card debt, and my credit score is around 537. These credit cards are the only debt I have.
The good news is that I’m starting a new job soon with a much better salary, and I’m really motivated to get my finances back on track. My long-term goal is to improve my credit score enough to buy a home within the next year or so.
So far, I’ve looked into debt consolidation, but I haven’t been approved by my credit union or other banks due to my credit score. I’ve also researched Chapter 7 bankruptcy, but it seems like it would hurt my chances of getting a mortgage in the near future, so I’m hesitant about going that route.
I know there’s no perfect answer, but I’d really appreciate hearing from people who’ve been in similar situations or who’ve successfully paid off large credit card balances and rebuilt their credit. What strategies worked for you? Anything you wish you’d known earlier?
Thank you in advance for any advice!
