How do I get black and vibrant red finish?

I’d like to make a black and red chessboard, but I’m not quite sure how to achieve these finishes. For the black squares, I might do the steel wool and vinegar ebonizing technique, unless someone has a better suggestion. But I don’t know what wood and finish to use to achieve a red color
