How do I (24F) prepare for a conversation with my girlfriend (26F) about the next steps in our relationship?

After three years of being friends, my girlfriend and I have been officially dating for four months now and it’s going great! I am happier and feel safer with her than I’ve ever felt with anyone before.

Next week, I am interviewing for a job that would require me to move to a location that is eight hours by car away. It’s a step above an entry-level job for an incredibly competitive job field and would waive full tuition fees for the required degree in the field. I would be in this job position for two years. I was recommended to apply by a member of the staff.

I know how incredible this job would be and an offer similar to it feels like it would be impossible to replicate. I don’t want to choose between this relationship and the work, but it feels like I may have to.

I am preparing to talk to my gf about where this may leave us if it works out. The way I see it, we have three choices: 1) I ask her to uproot her entire life and move with me. I want her there with me if she’d be willing, but I’m worried it’s much too big an ask (although I suppose that’s something I should let her decide). I am sure I will hear u-haul comments about this. 2) We try distance for the first couple of months while I’m there, and if we can make distance work, then we can trust that the connection is strong enough for her to move there with me. 3) We try distance for the entire time. 4) We break up. 5) I don’t choose the job, and I stay here.

I feel too young, our romantic relationship is too new and this is too good of an opportunity for me to throw it all out and choose her. I’ve heard far too many stories of people choosing a partner over work stability and having the relationship crumble after years and then being left to scramble. It’s not an option for me set aside my goals and aspirations and follow her instead. I really want to, but I worry that’s far too romance-movie inspired for reality. I’m worried it sounds incredibly callous to prioritize my work life over human connection, but I think that’s what I have to do, and I’m already heartbroken over it. I feel like she is the right person, and this might be the wrong time.

How do I prepare for this conversation? I’d talk with my mother, but she’s not supportive of my queerness and I don’t know who to turn to. I haven’t interviewed yet, so I know that I may be jumping the gun, but I will not keep this secret from my girlfriend.

tl;dr: Career opportunity getting in the way of my lesbian relationship and I don’t know how to prepare for the conversation with my girlfriend about it.
