Sarcasm

SpoilerDiscussion

I made this comment in a post but I'm curious what other folks think.

People have been focused on how the hive mind is willing to go to greath lengths to make Carol "happy" and follow through on her wishes (even up to the point of giving her an atom bomb) but something that I think is interesting is how it wasn't able to appropriately detect sarcasm. Even if it has an intellectual understanding of what sarcasm is, the very nature of a hive mind means that it has no use for external communication. It already has access to the true inner workings of every mind and so doesn't have an inherent undestanding of something as imperfect as language. Language, and all of its beautiful idiosyncracies and messiness must be incredibly difficult for the hive mind to actually understand outside of literal meaning. Body language, tone, metephorical context...maybe these are all things that the hive mind can't really understand. I wonder if they could trick the hive mind by speaking in a metaphor-rich poetic manner. You know, like the kind of thing a writer might have experience doing... The show does seem to be interested in exploring what art means to the individual and the collective (e.g. Carol and Helen's conversation in episode 1, "if it makes one person happy...") so I'm really interested to see how these themes continue to develop.
