can I use a cane?
I'm a teen, I've had myopia since I was in 3rd grade. Just a few years ago the eye doctor said my eyesight was deteriorating the fastest he'd ever seen. I currently have about a -4 prescription with my left eye being ever so slightly worse. My vision is even worse than my mother's.
I don't like to wear my glasses. Not because of any special reason, just because I don't want to. They look fine, they are fine, I just don't really wear them other than for school. Because of that I'm particularly well-adjusted to seeing with bad eyesight that other people who wear glasses even complimenting me on how well put together I seem. I can technically legally drive with my glasses on, although I don't really enjoy driving (its just not fun or exciting idk)
A few years ago my family kind of took a dive into poverty, so we have the state's insurance. Not a lot of eye doctors will take our insurance and even if they do, they are fairly far away. So my glasses as of now are currently around 2-3 years old and I haven't had an updated prescription for a while so idk how bad my eyesight is.
A cane would be a cheaper option for now, because we can just order one online for much cheaper. I don't go outside super often just cause I'm a nerd who likes to read inside--but when I do go outside I prefer to walk. When I'm walking I can't see when drivers motion for me to cross the street and I can't see if people are looking at me. Seeing what expression people have on their face is impossible so I usually try to just stare into the dark black holes that I know are 'eyes' so I still make eye contact. When I drop something on the floor I shuffle my feet around to feel it out. Or when water spills, that's especially hard because it's clear. The reason I do that is because I tend to utilize my body (feet, mouth) in ways other people would consider not-normal but I feel that all parts should be used. So when I do that I'm kind of just being dramatic, because I could just bend down and look closer at the ground
Recently, I made the text bigger on a website and I was like ?? omg I'm an old person.
Now I know a lot of regular people wouldn't know what they mean, but if I did buy a cane I'd buy the white one with red at the end to denote that I have low vision but I'm not completely blind.
I just feel sort of like a fraud?? if I do that. I can navigate the world, I can always ask my family members what the menu says or whatever. And if I have a cane people will probably feel like really bad for me, when I'm pretty much fine.
