Question as an ally
Hi! I’m not a part of the lgbtq but I’m a longtime ally and I just had a question. A friend of mine and I are disagreeing about something.
Scenario: a YouTuber you watch with no defined sexuality, they say a lot of things you agree with and they make you laugh. Plus they have a little inflection in their voice.
Is it okay to assume that they’re gay just bc of those factors?
I told my friend that I think it’s wrong to do that bc putting those stereotypes on gay people could diminish the actual meaning of being gay. Like “oh you talk like this and you say this, so you must be gay”. They keep trying to compare it to assuming someone’s Hispanic based off their accent, but I don’t think that’s the same. People who speak Spanish have that accent because of their language. And even then I wouldn’t like to assume anything. But gay people can have any accent and have any language. So assuming a man is gay because he has a tiny twang in his voice is different.
They say that they mean it as a compliment and it’s okay for them to say that, bc they’re apart of the lgbtq. but it just rubs me the wrong way, and I wanted to get some opinions from other people in the community.
