Should I accept a job that’s 1 hour away just to boost my CV? (5x8 shifts)
Hi everyone,
I could really use some outside opinions on this.
I recently had an interview for a job in the pharmaceutical industry. The contract is temporary and lasts until March 2026. The job itself is great for my résumé, and having this kind of experience would really help me get much better positions afterward.
Here’s the issue:
The workplace is about 1 hour away from where I live.
And the schedule is 5x8 shifts (rotating mornings/afternoons/nights).
So that means things like:
• Waking up at 3:30–4:00 AM for early shifts
• Driving home after night shifts when I’m exhausted
• Spending about 2 hours a day just commuting
• Basically living with a chaotic sleep schedule
It would only be for a few months, but I know that 5x8 shifts can be intense even without a long commute.
My goal:
I mostly want this job for the experience, not because it’s close or convenient. I know it would really strengthen my CV and open doors for future jobs.
But I’m worried the commute + shift work might be too draining.
So my question is:
Would you take a job that’s 1 hour away, with rotating shifts, just to level up your résumé for the future?
Has anyone done something similar? Is it manageable for a few months or does it completely destroy your routine?
Thanks for any honest advice !!
