A Mars-orbiting spacecraft has delivered one of the most significant breakthroughs in tracking the interstellar object 3I ATLAS. Using data from the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter, ESA improved the comet’s predicted position by a factor of ten, marking the first time astrometric measurements from another planet were officially accepted into the Minor Planet Center. This new angle from Mars reshapes how we observe fast-moving interstellar visitors and demonstrates a powerful new capability in planetary defence.

As 3I ATLAS races through the Solar System at nearly 250,000 km per hour, every hour of precision matters. The Mars–Earth triangulation sharply reduced uncertainty, allowing observatories to target the object with confidence before it disappears forever into interstellar space. ESA’s Juice spacecraft is now observing the comet in its post-perihelion phase, providing another layer of insight into this rare visitor. Together, these missions highlight a future where spacecraft across the Solar System form a distributed early-warning network.

This video explores the new trajectory refinements, the role of Mars-based astrometry, the implications for planetary defence, and ESA’s upcoming missions that will expand our ability to detect and intercept hazardous objects.
