advice with medications?
hello everyone, i’m getting a new psychiatrist soon, so this post’s primary purpose is to ask if anyone has been on meds that have TRULY helped them.
for reference, i’m a 20 yo female with an ocpd diagnosis. i have tried almost every ssri under the sun, but nothing helped. i tried trintellix too, but that did nothing positive for me.
the primary thing i’m looking to treat is my lack of being able to “live in the moment” if that makes sense. i am CONSTANTLY thinking ahead, planning what i have to do next, to the point where i have difficulties focusing. the secondary thing i’m seeking to treat is my lack of emotions. i feel emotions when they’re extreme; but on a day-to-day basis, i hardly experience any emotions and just feel numb. i (thankfully) haven’t experienced anything traumatic, so my limited emotional range is probably due to altered brain activity.
another thing i should mention is that i take NAC (n-acetylcysteine) in the morning and at night. this is just an amino acid, but i get it as a prescription because it helps prevent me from being compulsive.
i rely heavily on caffeine and have for years, it’s something that truly has benefited my mental health. i did a school project on this last year, and found that caffeine does increase norepinephrine and dopamine.
(disclaimer: i am not addicted to caffeine. maybe a little dependent, but definitely not addicted. i had a caffeine addiction a few years ago, so knows what that feels like. my body just functions better with moderately high doses of caffeine.)
recreationally, i’ve tried adderall and vyvanse, and both of those have been helpful in very small doses. would it be crazy of me to ask my new psychiatrist to try out a stimulant?
dextroamphetamine (basically adderall without the amphetamine) increases norepinephrine and dopamine, somewhat similar to what caffeine does. have any of you ever tried dextroamphetamine? from what i read, i feel like it could be beneficial for me and help reduce my caffeine consumption.
would it be worth a shot to ask my new psychiatrist about a stimulant even though i don’t have adhd or ocd? if anyone has input on other medications i would love to hear it. thank you if you read this far!
