New Apple Pencil Pro won’t connect to new iPad Air M3

Hello, I just purchased an iPad Air M3, and I purchased a Pencil Pro to go with it. However, when I got them home, I discovered that they won’t connect. They wouldn’t connect in iPad OS 18 or 26. I tried hard restarting. I tried resetting network connections. I’ve tried multiple orientations of how this pencil connects. Nothing works. Any advice?
