New-ish Friend is ignoring me after a minor conflict
I’m feeling so upset today and I guess just really need some support or advice, long story short I made a new friend earlier this year. We met in the sauna at a gym. Honestly I have/had a pretty big crush on this friend from when we met, however he is too young for me (I’m in my 30s he is in his 20s). I think he also liked me too for a while but lost interest at some point but we are still friends. The friendship has been a little up and down as I have been disappointed that we can’t seem to really get very close. He is often gone gone a lot and inconsistent. I understand that we can’t be in any sort of relationship for many reasons but I still wanted to be friends so I was trying.
This week he said something that I found offensive and I really had to say something. He apologized immediately for what he said and I thought that we worked it out and everything was fine. I felt like what he said was too judgmental and he needs to be more open minded and I told him that. However because of my anxiety and people-pleasing tendencies, I even found myself apologizing for making a big deal of it. But he did seem very apologetic like right away and said sorry multiple times. This happened while he was driving me home and we ended with a handshake and it was cordial and fine.
Fast forward to the next day, I was feeling awkward about the night before and figured I wouldn’t see him for a week (we don’t text and I don’t have his number). He showed up again at the gym and sauna and did not say hi or acknowledge me or anything. It was like I was totally iced out. I understand he could have been having a bad day but he has never acted this way with me before and the timing of his behavior seems too close to us having a minor conflict in his car the night before? He doesn’t seem very emotionally well these days (family health issues) so that possibly also be a reason. He also ignored me when he left, didn’t say goodbye or anything. Up until this point he had offered me rides home after and we would sometimes chat after.
I feel like an idiot posting this and probably will delete but I guess I need moral support or a reality check. Is he ignoring me now, do I just give up on the friendship? I understand he is not emotionally mature and I feel really triggered by the abrupt silent treatment and worries I am overreacting. I have had partners and friends in the past do this and it is awful. I don’t want to be treated like this so I may just change my gym schedule for a while to avoid him. I am also very sad the friendship seemingly fell apart so fast. I have a tendency to hold on to things even when they aren’t working. The sad thing is we were getting along just fine until all of this. I am worried I crossed a line but I felt like our friendship wouldn’t survive if I hadn’t said something. Thanks for reading.
