How do you keep your covers from warping after gluing?

I’m pretty new to bookbinding and every time I glue the cover paper to the boards, they start to curve a bit as they dry. Not dramatically, but enough that it annoys me. I’m pressing them between heavy books, but maybe I’m missing a step? Is this just normal beginner stuff or is there a trick to keeping boards perfectly flat?
