are somali asharaafs truly descendants of the prophet (pbuh)?
i’m asharaaf on both sides. asharaafs believe we descend from the prophet’s grandsons hasan and husayn, who are the sons of his daughter fatima. the ones who trace to hasan are hasan asharaaf, and the ones who trace to husayn are husayn asharaaf. anywho. i never had a reason to question it growing up. even somali elders from other tribes were gassing us, and why would everyone lie about something like that, right?
i took a dna test that showed i was 73.8% somali, 9.2% middle eastern, & 8.3% north afrikan. the other percentages are so tiny they don’t matter + are irrelevant to my point. the arab ancestry claim was supported by the test, especially because almost all the somalis i see do these tests are 100%— but, mine was taken with a company that doesn’t do too well with afrikan samples (i believe myheritagedna- lmk your thoughts), so i took it with a grain of salt. then, i know my abtiris & the beginnings + endings align with the belief of our ancestry, but there are missing names in the middle? granted, it was taught to me by my declining great-grandmother. i’ll keep digging on that with other elders.
i hold doubt because of the rzns i listed + bc so many somalis claim arab to distance themselves from blackness (here we go) ++ i’ve heard of several other qabiils that claim ancestry with the prophet or arabs in general. i still don’t necessarily believe people are lying about ancestry, but perhaps its all been a centuries long game of telephone that caused mix-ups? how did the prophet’s great (times ) grandkids end up in baadiyo, where my fam only left a generation ago? what’s really going on? does anyone have any resources to learn more? where my history nerds at? even the macrobian ones atp
note: i’m not a fan of qabiil because of what it’s done to our country, but i am really curious to know who and where i actually come from. besides, asharaafs aren’t even a part of the whole qabiil beef y’all be harming each other over wlh we’re just chill guys, i cannot foresee this possibly starting an issue
