Minimizing strength/size loss while recovering from surgery?

Hi all,

I’m scheduled for upcoming surgery to repair a hernia, and by doctor’s orders, will have to be out of the gym for 6 weeks following the procedure. I can still walk and do some light cardio once I feel up to it - just no heavy lifting. This will be my first time taking more than a week off from the gym in 2.5 years, so it’s definitely throwing me for a loop.

Questions for anyone who’s dealt with something similar:

-How should I eat? Obviously enough protein, but should I keep my calories at maintenance? Surplus to prevent losses?

-Are there any light activities I should be doing to help maintain while I recover?

-Anything else to know/expect?
