AIO: My first ever friend is now seeing my first ever (ex) boyfriend.

👥 friendship

Sorry if the title is confusing, let me explain.

One of my friends, Morgan, has been a part of my life since I was 6 months old. Her mom worked at the daycare I attended as an Infant, and she literally changed my diapers. When I became a toddler, Morgan and I lived in the same town so we attended the same school, elementary and high school. She was really my first ever friend. We played sports together, hung out after school, sat at the same lunch table, had sleepovers on school nights. Her family felt comfortable to me being that they literally took care of me from when I was a baby. They were almost like a family to me, too.

Fast forward and I am 13 years old. I start talking to and developing feelings for my brother’s best friend’s brother, Tyler. Eventually we become a couple and he is my first serious relationship. We ended up dating until I was 19 years old. Clearly this was a serious relationship, where I was around his family a lot, and he was around mine also. He knew my friends, and my friends knew him. We all went to the same school. The relationship even lasted through his military boot camp, and him being stationed out of the country for 2 years. It was serious. I lost my virginity to him also. Our break up wasn’t great, no cheating involved, but it was rough. We have had civil conversations every now and again afterward, and even met up a few times after.

One of our mutual friends hung out with Morgan, and Morgan confided in her that she has been talking to Tyler. Our mutual friend told her that she should give me a heads up, and Morgan told her that it “wasn’t serious” so she wasn’t going to say anything yet. Of course our mutual friend told me.

Fast forward to last year and I get a text from this friend to go on Instagram. The first thing I see is a picture of Morgan & Tyler. Clearly this isn’t just them hanging out as friends, this was them on a trip looking reaaaal close. My first reaction wasn’t jealousy, or anger, I honestly just thought to myself “this is really fucking weird.”

It’s weird that I found out through social media. It’s weird that I didn’t get a “hey girl” text or a heads up. She didn’t need my “approval”, as I can’t control relationships that aren’t mine, but a quick text letting me know what was coming, or that feelings were developed would have been nice. That was such an odd way to find out that one of my close friends was seeing my ex boyfriend. I don’t think it was right. She has never said anything about it, and I think she feels like she made it weird but now it’s too late.

It’s been 7 years since Tyler and I broke up. I’ve had multiple relationships since then and have clearly moved on. I do want them both to be happy, I just wish a friendship wasn’t ruined over the awkwardness of this all. We haven’t spoken since those pictures were taken. Nothing. No happy birthdays, no text messages, no check ins about our common interests we shared. Her parents still like my posts and wish me well but It’s just been awkward. AIO to think that I should have gotten a heads up? AIO to think that the way this was handled was weird AF? Should I have been the one to reach out to her over this?
