Why is chem called "Central Science"?

In the book Nobel Chemistry, the author says that 'Chemistry is sometimes called “the central science” because it connects physics with biology, matter with life' - I am not sure I understand that. How does it connect physics with bio? I can understand that chem and bio are related as in organic chem/biochemistry, but how does chem connect physics with bio?
