One of the big LDS truth-claims is that the Church “restored ancient doctrines lost from the earth.” So I pulled together a list of uniquely LDS teachings and checked whether any of them actually existed in ancient Judaism or early Christianity. When you look at the data, a pattern shows up:

Doctrine/Policy

|| || |Teaching/Practice|Claimed as "Restored"?|Actually Restored?| |Celestial marriage (eternal marriage)|Yes|No - New Doctrine| |Temple sealings / eternal families|Yes|No - New Doctrine| |Three degrees of glory|Yes|No - New Doctrine| |Premortal existence|Yes|No - New Doctrine| |Spirit world w/ missionary work |Yes|No - New Doctrine| |Baptism for the dead |Yes|No - New Doctrine| |Melchizedek/Aaronic priesthood offices |Yes|No - New Doctrine| |Temple endowment (tokens/signs/clothing)|Yes|No - New Doctrine| |Temple garments|Yes|No - New Doctrine| |God was once a man|Yes|No - New Doctrine| |Humans can become Gods|Yes|No - New Doctrine| |God has a body of flesh and bone|Yes|No - New Doctrine| |Jesus & Satan as literal spirit brothers|Yes|No - New Doctrine| |Plan of Salvation map / eternal progression|Yes|No - New Doctrine| |Tithing tied to temple access |Yes|No - New Doctrine| |Patriarchal blessings |Yes|No - New Doctrine| |Law of Consecration (LDS temple covenant) |Yes|No - New Doctrine| |Polygamy as eternal law|Yes|No - New Doctrine| ||||
